Introduction

Mobile Crane Operators operate many types of hoisting equipment to move, place and position items.

What do Mobile Crane Operators do on the job?

• operate mobile cranes, boom trucks, hoists and tower cranes to lift, move position or place equipment or materials
• perform pre-operational inspection and calculate crane capacities and weight to prepare for rigging and hoisting
• may be responsible for the assembly of mobile cranes, boom trucks, hoists and tower cranes on site
• perform routine maintenance work such as cleaning and lubricating cranes

Training Requirements

This training is based on the Red Seal Mobile Crane Operator Interprovincial Program Guide. (IPG)

To graduate from each level of the apprenticeship program, an apprentice must successfully complete the required technical training and compile enough on-the-job experience to total at least 1500 hours each year. Total trade time required is 4500 hours and at least 3 years in the trade.

WTTI delivers three levels of technical training delivered in various locations around the province:

• Level One: 14 days over 4 months in-class with online component (blended)
• Level Two: 14 days over 4 months in-class with online component (blended)
• Level Three: 14 days over two weeks in-class with online component (blended)

Examination required for proficiency certificates: lattice boom crane operator; boom truck operator “A”; boom truck operator “B”.
